Senior Project Self Reflection

(1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your 2-Hour Presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

I am proud that I got to teach people on what dance/movement therapy is because this is not a very well known form of therapy.

(2) Questions to Consider

a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your 2-Hour Presentation (self-assessment)? Why?

AE            P            AP            CR            NC
I would give myself an AE because eventhough I was nervous I was able to deliver all the information I needed to say. I also engaged my audience and by the looks of my different activities I could tell that they did learn a lot from what I taught them in my 2-hour.

b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project (self-assessment)? Why?

AE             P            AP            CR            NC
Over all I would give myself an AE because of the amount of work and research I've done. I didn't really come in with any contacts or connections. However, I managed to learn so much about my topic.

(3) What worked for you in your senior project?
Service Learning definitely worked for me, Working Bib, and 3-column. I was able to organize my presentation and I-Search based on my 3-column and I was able to stay organized throughout the year with my working bib, towers, etc. Service Learning worked because it was me experiencing everything I read and researched. Great experience.

(4) What didn’t work for you in your senior project?

What didn't work for me is that my interviews where late and that brought my grade down in a sense. Relying on someone else for my grade definitely didn't work for me.

(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.

I've made so many connections throughout. I've learned so much about my topic that if I do end up following this career path I would go in knowing. I also know of a lot of workshops that happen so it would just help me over all move into this field of therapy.
I've also learned to contact people and that I can ask help to professionals and some are more than willing to help with what ever it is I'm trying to find out.

Service Learning Log
The contact information has remained the same as in my interview. I will give ortega the information again if necessary.
Contact: Lynnette Adams.
Interpretive

I think the most important thing I gained from this experiece is the change in my perspective. I really got to know the kids that I was working with. They go through daily struggles but most always come to the therapy session with a smile. I really got to learn how to work in this type of enviroment. How to interact with the instructor, my mentor, and staff that would work there. It was a really enriching experience.

How did what you did help you answer your EQ? Please explain.

Service learning helped me answer my EQ because I actually saw and participated on the process of dance/movement therapy sessions. I was able to see and talk to my mentor, Lynnette, about the kids and how their progress. I was also able to participate and lead the session, go around making sure everyone was participating in this group session.

Applied
This helped me with my EQ because one of my answers is Being able to assess your patients at the start of your therapy session. With this I was able to get to know these kids and be able to notice how their attitude change and when, why it happens. I'm able to see in what mood their in now when they go to the dance/movement therapy session.

I interviewed Jazmine Solis Thursday 26, 2012 at 2:25.

(1) What ideas do you have for your senior project and why?
  • Baking because she wants to learn the skills needed for it. Nursing because it is a possible career choice.
  • I told her to find an ROP class by now because it is the easiest way to learn your topic accurately.
(2) What do you plan to do to complete the 10 hours of service learning (working with an expert) which is due prior to senior year starting?  Note: They also have to complete the 50 hours during the school year.
  • Work or Volunteer at a bakery or a private practice.
  • What feedback did you offer them in response? Make sure you make connections because these are the people that could help you with your components and research.
(3) What do you hope to see or expect to see when watching the class of 2012 present their two hour presentations?
  • Hope to learn topics and take something from it. Hope to be engaged and entertained.
  • Just try to get through the ones that are as appealing to you and understand that these kids might be very overwhelmed.
(4) What questions do they have about senior project?  What additional recommendations would you give the 2013 student about senior project?  Be specific and note what you told them.
  • What can you tell me about the interviews?
  • What about above and beyond?
  • How is the stress?
  • What is Science Fair about?

Make sure you don't procrastinate and ask your house teacher for any questions you may have. You should use your contacts and connections to get research. Look into a more of the details. This will help you back up your answers.

  • Answer 3 = In order to be a successful dance movement therapist you should be able to ANALYSE MOVEMENT.
  • Evidence = In order to get licenced you should have studied what Laban Movement Analysis is.
  •  he dissabilities of some kids won't let them verbaly communicate so you have to base yourself on their movements.
  • Part of being a successful therapist is being able to meet a goal, if you can't read thought the movements if there is improvement you could not meet that goal.
  • Source = Lynnette Adams, DMT requirements and information journal, Lori Baudino.

The Product

As of March my product has mostly come from my service learning. I got offered a job, however i was unable to take it. This has proven that throughout this project not only have i gained knowledge of my topic but I've also gained life long connections with the people that I've interviewed and work with.

Independent Component 2 Plan Approval

(1) Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.

I plan to volunteer 30 hours with the kids from club aspire. They are the current group of kids I work with now in service learning.

(2) Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.

I will be going monday through friday to volunteer from 3-7pm.

(3) How does your independent study component relate to your EQ?

This will help me see other sides of the kids. I would be able to interpret what they are saying during the dance movement therapies because I would develope a closer relationship with them.

Independent Component 1

Literal

I, Esther Solis, affirm that I complited my Independent component which represents 30+ hours of work.

I took a ballet class for about 5 months. I would go once a week for an hour. When my parents where able to provide me with extra instruction time before class, I would go thirty minutes before my lesson and work with my instructor. I would practice on my own for and hour of thirty minutes on Thursdays depending how busy my days where.

Interpretive

By going to this class every week not only did I obtain a better shape but I was also able to understand many aspects of dance and movement. My body was able to go through soreness but also that relif when I had worked out. I think that by taking this class I obtained a good foundation of dance. Which is important because to become a successfull dance/movement therapy, you need to be able to know movement dance. Being able to experience this myself has only made me more aware of how each movement can help a patient. By going to lessons and practicing, I think this was one of the best things I could of done to help me with my senior project.

This experience helped me answer my EQ because I was able to know how to be more interpretative when it comes to dancing. In order to be successful in dance/movement therapy you need to know how to interpret and get involved with patients, especiallyin group. I was also able to learn from my instructor that Patience, is necessary! You need to know your students and their learning pace, because everyone is so diverse and different.

Answer 1

Senior Project 2-Hour House Meeting #1
Content:
(1)   In order to become a successful dance/movement therapist one must be able to know their patients pain; they should have broad knowledge of their disease or disability.

(2) What possible evidence do you have to support this answer?
  • The dance/movement therapist has to walk in and do an assesment to the cancer patients to see how they are feeling that day. She needs to know what pains they have and were in order to work arond them or towards helping them heal.(Dance Movement Therapy at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. #25 RC-AV)
  • By going to my service learning I've also learned that kids with different disorders tend to take more time or need more help while dancing or moving. Knowing which kids are disturbed by noice or deaf has really helped me know in which ways I can help them.

(3) What source(s) did you find this evidence and/or answer?

I used my research, like sited up above. Also my service learning experience.

Service Learning

  • I am working with Church Group of people who have learning difficulties. They have a program called Club Aspire. The're the people receive and hour and a half of Dance Therapy every Thursday.
  • My contact is Lynnette. She is the Dance Therapy instructor.

  • To complete the 10 hour requirement I've been attending this therapies for the last 3 months, give and take a couple of Tuesdays, and I help by going around and making sure every person is moving, reaching their potential. I have also helped them with their annual Holidays Dance Show. I worked with them for 5 hours and I was involved backstage making sure the kids where in the right place. Also, I participated in the actual show helping the kids that can't really move without assistance. Ultimately I've been working on teaching the kids a Hula routine. This will probably lead to the club having their own Fundraising Luau.

  • As of right now I've worked 21 and one half hours.
